It was an era that witnessed the introduction of the locomotive (train) as the latest mode of transportation at a time when horse drawn wagons were the conventional mode of transportation. The locomotive was such an exciting novelty of that era that it never fails to arrest the attention of people, old and young alike irrespective of their pre-occupation prior to the movement of the announcement of its imposing presence thoughts it riveting vibration noise. By all standard of that era, it was such a phenomenon. What could explain to them the bizarre fact that a “carriage” Bigger, longer and much heavier than the beast drawn wagons they’ve been accustomed to could move all by its own without an horse pulling it, yet it moves at a neck breaking speed that was out of this world covering several miles without getting tired like the horse – it was one greater marvel that beat the seven wonders of the world of that time.
At the very threshold of that had his attention aroused by an attitude in a girl overtime. Any time the train announces its passage, children troop out to take vantage position on elevated heights such as trees to catch the best glimpse of the train as it races along at a distance far away from the country side they reside. What puzzled the man was that he saw the enactment of this act whenever he sees children basking in the euphoria of the excitement of taking up their respective vantage position to get the best view of the train, their sees this girl (about 9 years of age), neck bent, she anchors a boy (about five years of age) on her shoulder. By so doing she stands no chance at all to see the passing train but the boy she carries was always seen catching the greatest fun of his life – he waves ecstatically to the passing train in a manner that exudes pure joy and excitement. Out of curiosity, the man questioned the little girl one day to ascertain the rationale behind her action (i.e. why should she deny herself the joy of seeing the train?). In an emotional response, the girl response, the girl being close to tears drew the back of her arm across her face to cover her tears-soaked eyes and then retorted in a heart rending manner; I and my brother used to come here together to watch the train with other children in the neighborhood, but since the time he lost one of his legs that has been an impossible thing to do together. This is one thing we were both happy doing together back then, however I now derive my joy in seeing my brother happy, joyously waving to the pausing train. Seeing him happy again makes me happy as well even though I’m deprived of the pleasure of seeing the train. “When he is happy I’m happy”.
What else aptly describes love? It’s no little thing that so many Christians are failing and breaking the Lord’s heart in this area when practical occasions or circumstances call for it despite after hearing loads of sermons on love; or what can we say about Christians that common logic of perception and evaluation points to them the evident fact that some of their brethren are living from hand to mouth or that some of the brethren they fellowship together are passing through some unpalatable or difficult times which a common compassionate show of concern and empathy can go a long way to ease the pain, rather, all that is seen is an indifference that sends pain down the marrow. At times it could be hard for such Christians going through the pain to comprehend the fact that they are actually in the midst of God’s children or a mere secular social gathering where people come to show off their wealth, comfort and relative strength to the weaker ones. Rather than making them happy, they add to their sorrows and unconsciously add to the sense of lack of self worth of such weaker ones. Was it in vain the Lord said our genuine altitude in showing the fullness of love to one another and people at large is the pointer to the fact that we are His disciple indeed (John 13:35;Mathew 25:37 – 46)? We are called out of the world to be its light and salt, people that cares and show unconditional love in every way No matter how we preach Christ in all zealousness, no matter how intensely we preach love, if we fail to live the practical life of love, the world will only see us as mere noise makers (1Cor. 13:1) or bunch of hypocrites.
Oh that the Lord will make us these Angels!
